The economy of central Switzerland has always been closely linked to the Gotthard route. Thanks to this central transport axis through the Alps, the region can look back on a rich industrial history. This is where mountain landscape meets industrial revolution.
Rumbling noises echo through the idyllic mountain landscape of Uri. In 1872, heavy machinery drives up the valley to Göschenen to build a new railway line. Miners are blasting and drilling a hole through the Gotthard massif. The first railway tunnel through the Gotthard is opened in 1882.

The Gotthard railway brought prospect to the remnote valleys of Uri. The most important north-south connection through the Alps has connected Uri with the world.
The SBB Historic Depot of the Gotthard Railway in Erstfeld takes you back in time to the golden age of the railway which had a decisive impact on the canton of Uri.
Further north on the Zurich-Gotthard route lies the canton of Zug. It forms a link between the economic metropolis of Zurich and the trade route across the Alps. Thanks to this favourable location, the canton of Zug itself evolved into an important industrial production site. In the 19th century, numerous textile factories were set up along the river Lorze, taking advantage of the water power.
The Lorze Industrial trail stretches over 30km. In seven stages it leads you past bridges and hydraulic structures to former factories and mills. Information boards provide interesting facts about the industrial history of the region along the way.
